Who can access the NDIS? Am I eligible?

If you are aged under 65 years and have a permanent and significant disability, you may be eligible for NDIS services. Find out about your NDIS eligibility.

The NDIS provides support for people with disability to achieve their goals, participate in their community, and be part of the workforce.

To become an NDIS participant you must satisfy each of the following conditions through an assessment that will be conducted by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

Disability requirement You have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities, such as dressing, showering, cleaning your house, or travelling around your community
Age requirement You are aged less than 65 years when you register for the NDIS
Residency requirement You are an Australian citizen, hold a permanent visa, or have a Protected Special Category visa

Disability Requirement

The NDIA will ask you questions to see if you meet ALL of the following conditions:

You have an impairment or condition that is likely to be permanent
Your impairment substantially reduces your ability to participate effectively in activities, or perform tasks or actions unless you have:
assistance from other people, or
assistive technology or equipment (other than common items such as glasses), or
you can’t participate effectively even with assistance or aids and equipment
Your impairment affects your capacity for social and economic participation
You are likely to require support under the NDIS for your lifetime

NDIA may ask you to provide information about your disability, development delay, or early intervention requirements. This may include providing copies of existing letters, assessments or reports from health or educational professionals that detail your impairment and its impact on your daily life.

NDIS Eligibility Age Requirement

You must be aged under 65 years at the time you register for an assessment with NDIA. As long as your register before your 65th birthday, and satisfy the other eligibility requirements, you will be able to choose if you use NDIS services or aged care services.

Residency Requirement

To access the NDIS, you must live in Australia and be ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

An Australian citizen
A permanent resident
Hold a Protected Special Category Visa

What If I’m Not Eligible?

To ensure you receive the right support it’s important to find out if you’re eligible for the NDIS by completing your registration and assessment.

If you are not eligible for NDIS, aged under 65 years, and have a disability or other condition that restricts your ability to carry out everyday activities, you may be eligible for disability & health services through a variety of programs in NSW.

If you are over the age of 65 (or over 50 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders), you may be eligible for aged home care services through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).

What is NDIS Support Coordination?
There are three levels of support coordination that can be included in your plan:
- Support connection – This support is to build your ability to connect with informal, community and funded supports enabling you to get the most out of your plan and achieve your goals.
- Support coordination – coordination of supports: This support will assist you to build the skills you need to understand, implement and use your plan. A support coordinator will work with you to ensure a mix of supports are used to increase your capacity to maintain relationships, manage service delivery tasks, live more independently and be included in your community.
- Specialist support coordination – This is a higher level of support coordination. It is for people whose situations are more complex and who need specialist support. A specialist Support Coordinator will assist you to manage challenges in your support environment and ensuring consistent delivery of service.
Depending on your individual goals, plan objectives and aspirations you may receive funding for these supports in your plan.
Our NDIS Consulting Service
We provide NDIS consulting to get you were you need to be with understanding the NDIS and accessing the NDIS. Our dedicated team provide support where needed and guide you to build your capacity. You may be first accessing the NDIS or have a NDIS plan but in need of support coordination. Either way were here to help! It is a one off fee that is private agreement, which means cannot be claimed from NDIS funding. Please make contact if your in need of support and do not know where to turn, we are always here to provide support regarding the NDIS.
How Can A Support Coordinator Help Me?

A Support Coordinator will support you to understand and implement the funded supports in your plan and link you to community, mainstream and other government services. A Support Coordinator will focus on supporting you to build skills and direct your life as well as connect you to providers.

Your Support Coordinator will assist you to negotiate with providers about what they will offer you and how much it will cost out of your plan. Support coordinators will ensure service agreements and service bookings are completed. They will help build your ability to exercise choice and control, to coordinate supports and access your local community.

They can also assist you in planning ahead to prepare for your plan review.

Support coordinators will assist you to ‘optimise’ your plan ensuring that you are getting the most out of your funded supports.
What If I’m Not Happy With My NDIS Plan?

If your not happy with or you feel that you were not listened to during your Planning Meeting you can always request for a review. To submit a review of a decision you need to ensure this is submitted within 90 days of your NDIS plan approval.

If your needs have changed suddenly your can also complete a change of circumstances application which can be submitted at any time. You will be required to show evidence of the change in circumstances, but rest assured were here to support you through the whole process.
